Abstract:The paper analyzed a severe fire accident happened at Minhang District of Shanghai City on May 4, 2006. The occurring, arising, spreading, and exterminating of the fire were detected by the Shanghai WSR-88D Doppler weather radar on precipitation mode during the fire accident. The case analysis results showed that due to the burning of waste wood and chemical materials the smoke echoes of the fire were detected by the radar on precipitation mode. In addition, the environmental meteorological condition around the fire and the burning convection compensation which could cause the augmentation of carbon parcels that could be clearly detected by radar were other important reasons. Furthermore, strong wind might make the fire swing, and the change of the wind direction might cause the sudden turning of the fire. Therefore, timely and accurately meteorological detection and forecast can be a significant insurance for effectively and quickly putting out the fire.
