Abstract:This paper performed diagnosis analysis on the strong thunderstorm process of a lightning accident occurred at Zhangjiagang toll station of the highway along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, and discussed comprehensively about the problems of its lightning protection engineering. The result showed that the thunderstorm occurred at the edge of subtropical high circulation, the subtropical high was strong, but it decreased eastward significantly, and the ridge location and the flow field changed accordingly. The northwest airflow of the eastern side of the subtropical high, combined with the weak cold air going southward from the north along the northwest airflow, made the temperature in Jiangsu going down quickly and provided important conditions for the enhancements for atmospheric instability and the triggering for the release of instable energy. This paper also analyzed the relation between strong thunderstorms and convective parameters and their evolution, and explored the role that the superior unstable parameters played in the strong thunderstorms. According to field investigations and analysis at the lightning accident at the toll station, several problems of the lightning protection engineering were found involving equipment grounding, equal potential, line screen, the setup and installation of surge protectors, grounding resistance, and so on. And we suggest 6 items of lightning protection engineering rectification according to the above-mentioned problems.
