Abstract:The soil moisture data acquired from automatic soil moisture stations was used to evaluate the reliability of four remotely sensed soil moisture products (ASCAT, WINDSAT, FY3B, SMOS) over provinces in China during 2012. Results showed that the ASCAT product performed best with higher correlation coefficient with observation and lower normalized standard deviation, the WINDSAT product ranked secondly, better than the FY3Bm, and the SMOS product performed worst in most areas of China because of the disturbance of radio frequency interference. All these four products performed well in the Northwest China, such as Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, and so on. Furthermore, even in the same season, the same satellite soil moisture product showed great spatial differences in different regions, which may be due to the various surface vegetation cover types.
